Abstract:

Crystals of ions are a promising tool for implementing quantum simulation e.g., spin interaction in a solid.  For decades, ion chains have been confined in rf-traps and Penning traps that provide good stability and reasonable control over ions. Still, ions are driven into micromotion in these platforms limiting the applications of the system. It has been shown that a single beam that is spatially focused can also confine a chain of cold ions without introducing any similar micromotion effect. In this talk, as a next step in confining and localizing cold ions in a light-based platform, I present the first successful trapping of an ion Colomb crystal up to three ions in a 1d-optical lattice in Freiburg. We observe orders of magnitude enhancement in the axial trapping frequencies revealing single-site confinement for each individual trapped ion.
