QCQT fellowships

Artemii Efimov and Aaron Daniel were awarded a QCQT fellowships and will start their PhD in the research group of Dominik Zumbühl and Patrick Potts. The board was impressed by their excellent presentations, outstanding knowledge in the field of their master projects and their overall profile and wishes them a successful start!

QCQT – logo competition

In summer we started a competition between all QCQT PhD students for the best QCQT logo. The board evaluated all proposals and determined the winners: 1st place: Simon Geyer, 2nd place: Vera Weibel, and 3rd place: Nicolas Forrer. Congratulations and many thanks to all who participated! Please use the new logo from now on!

The photon trainer

In her dissertation, the QCQT physicist Dr. Natasha Tomm co-developed a super-efficient source of individual photons (Uni News). Her research could help make data exchange more tap-proof. The Swiss Academy of Sciences has awarded her the Prix Schläfli 2022 in physics.

QCQT PhD get-together

With dropping Covid restrictions we decided that it was time again for a fun and informal event. PhD students from 12 different research groups met in the late afternoon to socialize, exchange ideas and have some drinks together. An interactive game stimulated conversations about academic and recreational subjects.

QCQT PhD-school General Assembly 2020

The general assembly of the PhD-school was held online via zoom. A new executive board was elected Prof. Jelena Klinovaja, Prof. Ilaria Zardo, Prof. Patrick Maletinsky, and Prof. Ernst Meyer. We have now 44 registered PhD students and the first ones already finished successfully their PhD. In 2020 the QCQT PhD school contributed  53 reviewed papers, 22 talks, 22 posters and 7 invited seminars, 5 awards, and 3 media contributions to the overall scientific output of the Department of Physics.

Storytelling, Message Distilling and Presentation Design for Scientists

The 2-day workshop was focused on communication strategies for scientists and the improvement of the personal presentation or poster design. The course was offered by the explainables (www.explainables.org) Daniel Angerhausen (Senior Scientist ETH, Zürich) and Amran Salleh (Graphic Designer, Hamburg).

Project Management for Researchers

In this comprehensive full-day workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of a project life cycle and principles of effective project management: how to initiate, plan, and execute a project that meets objectives, on time and within the budget. Project management competency development will be achieved through (i) interactive and hands-on workshop exercises, and (ii) subsequent one-on-one mentoring and monitoring of the successful implementation of the acquired knowledge into participant’s projects and working environment. The course was instructed by Dr. Dimitrije Krstic.

Writing Efficiency: Tools and Techniques

In this workshop, we focus on the process of preparing research articles and doctoral theses. We do not discuss issues related to text quality but talk about getting started, keeping momentum, and finishing in time. The course was instructed by Dr. Philipp Mayer (www.science-textflow.ch)

Special QCQT Winter Event

Quantum computing and quantum technology is a field underpinned by powerful ideas in quantum physics. All of us working in this area need to become fluent with these ideas. For most of us, these concepts go beyond our undergraduate courses. The research literature can be very technical.  To plug this gap, the QCQT PhD School has organised a Winter Event with five inspiring speakers and five fascinating topics!

Effective teamwork and collaboration skills

A transferable skills workshop was provided for the PhD school members to strengthen the basic understanding of teambuilding and teamwork principles, as well as the skills needed for efficient teamwork and collaboration, including how to positively influence others. The course was instructed by Dr. Dimitrije Krstic.

The QCQT PhD school members went for an excursion and Lab visit to the research laboratories of IBM in Rüschlikon, Switzerland.
